Having started out as a fashion brand in 1921, Gucci has established itself as one of the leading accessories labels. It is now part of the Gucci Group, which is owned by Kering, a French company. According to Business Week Magazine, the brand has generated around €4.2 billion in worldwide revenue in 2008. In the same year, the brand managed to climb up to the 41st place in the annual 2009 magazine known as “Top Global 100 Brands”, a chart produced by Interband. As of September 2009, the brand has 278 directly-operated stores all over the globe. Its products are also available via fashion department stores and franchises.
Their high quality materials, excellent craftsmanship and creative styles made Gucci a popular symbol in Italy and across the world - it has been recognized as one of the best-selling Italian brands.
Tom Ford started the the Gucci eyewear line while he was working for the brand in the 1990s. The success of the line is, in part, thanks to the many celebrities who have taken to wearing Gucci shades. Jennifer Lopez, Amanda Bynes, Nicole Scherzinger and Kanye West – to name but a few – have all been photographed wearing Gucci eyewear.
